St. Thomas at a Glance

St Thomas is part of the US Virgin Islands and is 1,075 miles east/southeast of Miami Beach, Florida.
  • Cyril E King (STT) airport is located on St Thomas.
  • St Thomas has a population of about 51,000.
  • Nicknamed Rock City for the mountainous terrain, St Thomas is just a 2 ½ hour non-stop from Miami and roughly 3 ½ from New York City.
  • The island is twelve miles long by three miles. There are many harbors and white sandy beaches running along the outstanding shoreline of St Thomas.
  • Most of the north side of St Thomas is residential. You may see a few hotels in the hillsides but popular on the north side are island villas.  Privacy and a home away from home is the best part of the villas at St Thomas North Side.
  • In comparison the Eastside of St Thomas offers up luxury resorts and hotels. There are many time share properties on the eastside along the shores that also offer access to beaches. A ten minute drive from the area of Red Hook will find you in the popular shopping area with wonderful restaurants and friendly ferries to Water Island, or other islands such as St. Croix and St. John.
  • There are no casinos on St Thomas however you can find one on St. Croix. St Thomas does offer video slot play in some of the local restaurants and at the two gaming centers on the island.
If the prospect of owning property  is not your only agenda on St Thomas, it maybe a good idea to come during Carnival or the annual Bastille Day the second week of July on the 14th. Bastille Day is a French Holiday similar to the 4th of July in the United States. Why does St Thomas celebrate a French holiday? A large part of the population on St Thomas is French. Starting in the 1920’s many people migrated to St Thomas from St. Barthelemy which is a French owned island in the Caribbean. Bastille Day is just part of a week long celebration of French Heritage.

Another popular celebration is the annual Chili Cook Off where all the local restaurants and residents compete for the hottest chili in the land.  Sponsored by some residents from the Texas society  living on St Thomas. They take their chili seriously while crazy games, music and a good time is had by all. Usually in August, this year’s celebration was held on August 8th, 2008.
Carnival on the island of St Thomas is held in April of each year. Throughout the island of St Thomas, dancing, festivities and music-making create mayhem during carnival. The focus of events is the port of Charlotte Amelie and the Lionel Roberts Stadium shows off the big displays, competitions and parades.  There are calypso competitions, a children's parade, coronations of a carnival queen, king, prince and princesses. There is a different theme every year.  Visitors are made to feel very welcome.
